It’s time to update a post from a few years ago about my homemade trail mix. I’ve been making this for years and if you’re a client (or friend or family member) or if you have attended a talk I’ve given, you likely received a bag (or three) of Neily’s Rockin’ Health Trail Mix. I came up with the idea at the request of a client looking for a healthier afternoon snack, something other than plain nuts.

I first chose registered dietitian nutritionist Jill Weisenberger for Kristine to interview because Jill has not one, but three books. I love Mondays! Really I do—especially because I work for myself. My boss is the best!
One of the reasons for my love of Mondays is Meatless Mondays! After enjoying a beautifully cooked steak and piece of salmon Sunday during my friend Walker’s Super Bowl party, it was time to lay low on the animal protein. (Love that about being a flexitarian—I don’t deny myself red meat, it’s my occasional treat.)

I moved down to Texas quite a number of years ago and when I had my first New Year’s was served black-eyed peas. It turns out it’s a Southern tradition—supposedly black-eyed peas bring luck and prosperity.
Apparently, the tradition started with the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah. But if you are in the South on New Year’s Day or even New Year’s Eve after the strike of midnight you might be served black-eyed peas. Continue reading

Thanksgiving is almost here and for the 1 percent with celiac disease and estimated 6 percent with gluten sensitivity it undoubtedly will be a challenging holiday to maneuver. But quite honestly I’m not worried about them. They take their disease very seriously and don’t mess around. Plus there are numerous resources they most certainly have turned to. Sadly, two out of every three Americans are overweight and one in three classified as obese. It is said 90 – 95 percent of those that lose weight will gain it back. Previously I wrote about a common reason someone might hit a plateau in their weight loss efforts. This post is not about plateaus but just weight loss in general—why someone may not make the progress they feel they deserve.
Let me tell you about another client I had and not an uncommon issue I see amongst individuals doing all the right things but lamenting, “I just don’t get it. I don’t eat fast food, fried food, refined white flour, highly processed foods, etc. but I’m not losing weight. I should be losing weight eating the way I do.” Continue reading
My mom made a comment about my Facebook page which got me thinking. (Don’t moms have a way of doing that—making you think?) I often post my Neily on Nutrition blogs and videos in addition to my endless posts and pictures about my Great Dane fosters on my private FB page. I also have my Neily on Nutrition business page, but Facebook has an algorithm and only a select few get to see those posts, unless I want to pay to boost my posts. (I don’t.)
