National Blueberry Month – a month to celebrate the blue gems

blueberriesCan you believe it’s July? It’s also National Blueberry Month. As a confessed and proud blueberry addict, I’m here to show you a couple of ways to celebrate. Homemade 4-Bean Soup – in honor of National Homemade Soup Day!

I love Mondays! Really I do—especially because I work for myself. My boss is the best!

One of the reasons for my love of Mondays is Meatless Mondays! After enjoying a beautifully cooked steak and piece of salmon Sunday during my friend Walker’s Super Bowl party, it was time to lay low on the animal protein. (Love that about being a flexitarian—I don’t deny myself red meat, it’s my occasional treat.)

The New Year’s tradition of black-eyed peas — Bring on the luck and prosperity!

I moved down to Texas quite a number of years ago and when I had my first New Year’s was served black-eyed peas. It turns out it’s a Southern tradition—supposedly black-eyed peas bring luck and prosperity.

Apparently, the tradition started with the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah. But if you are in the South on New Year’s Day or even New Year’s Eve after the strike of midnight you might be served black-eyed peas. Continue reading

Two simple ways to deseed a pomegranate (aka the jewel of autumn)

Fall is such a great time to get the wonderful pomegranate fruit. They’re actually called the jewels of autumn. Tucked inside the big red spheres are little red seeds called arils. Sweet with a bit of tartness.

They are however a mess to prepare, if you don’t know the right techniques! In these two videos I demonstrate how to deseed without staining your clothes a lovely bright red. Continue reading

Thanks to some fabulous marketing by one particular company, one of my all-time favorite fruits has skyrocketed in popularity. Mind you, I’m not a huge fan of the juice. I’m actually not a huge fan of any juice. Have always preferred eating my fruit versus drinking it—especially pomegranates. But they sure are buggers to eat. The challenge is extracting those beautiful red seeds—called arils—without staining clothes red. Continue reading
