It’s time to update a post from a few years ago about my homemade trail mix. I’ve been making this for years and if you’re a client (or friend or family member) or if you have attended a talk I’ve given, you likely received a bag (or three) of Neily’s Rockin’ Health Trail Mix. I came up with the idea at the request of a client looking for a healthier afternoon snack, something other than plain nuts.
I love to eat. I love good food. And I like to eat a lot of it. But that’s a problem because I can’t. Not if I want to maintain a healthy weight. Many years ago I learned to volumize food. It’s a concept more common and popularized thanks to the terrific work of Barbara Rolls, PhD, her research and many subsequent books on Volumetrics, her first written in 2000. The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet: Smart, Simple, Science-Based Strategies for Losing Weight and Keeping It Off is more recent. It’s not a new concept to lose weight. Greetings! We’re back for another Neily on Nutrition book series post together with Kristine James, featuring a book authored by my colleague Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD, CDE, Eat Out, Eat Well – The Guide to Eating Healthy in Any Restaurant.
Hope has authored many books including Diabetes Meal Planning Made Easy, Complete Guide to Carb Counting: How to Take the Mystery Out of Carb Counting and Improve Your Blood Glucose Control, as well as a few books for her colleagues including Practical Carbohydrate Counting: A How-to-Teach Guide for Health Professionals.
One of the most important things my clients work on when we begin our coaching relationship is to honor hunger and fullness. It’s one of the best ways to break away from the diet mentality. There are many examples of how this propels my clients forward in establishing a healthy relationship with food.

I enjoy Chipotle. They have good fresh food. I learned long ago however that good fresh food does not always mean good for the waist line. Most everyone watching their weight knows to avoid the burrito at Chipotle and opt for the burrito bowl instead. The burrito is more like a body pillow—the tortilla alone adding an additional 300 calories.
So indeed the burrito bowl is better. Nonetheless the calories can really add up if you’re not careful. Lesson learned from my client. “I should have looked up the information before I went. But I honestly had no idea. I thought I was eating so healthy.” Yes, she was but as I’ve written before it’s easy to overeat even healthy food. Continue reading

Sure, much of my work is with weight loss, though here’s the kicker, I actually de-emphasize the scale. More importantly, it’s the lifestyle and behavioral changes that ultimately will provide my clients with the abundant energy and life of their dreams. The phrase the no diet diet came to my mind. (Darn, it’s already taken.)
