Tabbouleh is a traditional Middle Eastern vegetarian salad made of finely chopped parsley, diced tomatoes, crushed mint, fine bulgur (burghul), chopped green onions, extra virgin olive oil, lime/lemon juice, and salt.

It’s amazing how many people are experts in nutrition. I was at a seminar last Saturday—totally unrelated to nutrition. (WordPress if you must know—I guess I’m a nerd at heart. Yep, spent a beautiful day geeking out indoors.)

Previously I wrote about a common reason someone might hit a plateau in their weight loss efforts. This post is not about plateaus but just weight loss in general—why someone may not make the progress they feel they deserve.
Let me tell you about another client I had and not an uncommon issue I see amongst individuals doing all the right things but lamenting, “I just don’t get it. I don’t eat fast food, fried food, refined white flour, highly processed foods, etc. but I’m not losing weight. I should be losing weight eating the way I do.” Continue reading

Years ago when I worked at Cooper Clinic I acquired a client when another staff dietitian left. The client had great success losing about 60 pounds in less than a year—just over one pound per week which was fabulous weight loss! My mom made a comment about my Facebook page which got me thinking. (Don’t moms have a way of doing that—making you think?) I often post my Neily on Nutrition blogs and videos in addition to my endless posts and pictures about my Great Dane fosters on my private FB page. I also have my Neily on Nutrition business page, but Facebook has an algorithm and only a select few get to see those posts, unless I want to pay to boost my posts. (I don’t.)
I love educating people and increasing nutrition awareness with label reading, ingredient lists, etc. The main theme of my message at a Southwest Airlines health fair was—just because it’s organic or gluten-free or comes from a health food store does not guarantee healthfulness.
Here are a few examples focusing on organic and gluten-free.
Years ago I had a client losing weight but hit a plateau. She was frustrated her weight loss had come to a halt. On several occasions I had asked her to keep track of her food so I could help identify where she might need to make modifications. She was very resistant to keeping a log—too busy, always forgot etc. At one appointment she said to me, “You know, I eat different when I write it down.”
I let that statement sink in for a moment and it didn’t take long for her to start laughing. She realized, that’s the point right? Indeed. It is. And eating different in a positive way. Continue reading
